Hello, I started learning Arabic recently and I got a doubt. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 113, why is the feminine verb "Qฤlat" used to refer to both Yahลซd (Jews) and Naแนฃฤrฤ (Christians)?
Please explain the grammatical reasoning behind this usage. Thanks.

The singular word for "ูŠูŽู‡ููˆุฏ" (Jews) is "ูŠูŽู‡ููˆู’ุฏููŠูŒ"
Similarly, the singular word for ู†ูŽุตูฐุฑูฐู‰" (Christians) is ูŒ"ู†ูŽุตู’ุฑูŽุงู†ููŠ"

And ูŠูŽู‡ููˆุฏ and ู†ูŽุตูฐุฑูฐู‰ are Collective nouns as they are names of communities (ู‚ูŽูˆู…)
In Arabic , we assume collective nouns as feminine.
Also,ูŠูŽู‡ููˆุฏ and ู†ูŽุตูฐุฑูฐู‰ are broken plural of ูŠูŽู‡ููˆู’ุฏููŠูŒ and ูŒู†ูŽุตู’ุฑูŽุงู†ููŠ. And broken plural can take feminine verb.

Thus both the conditions, collective nouns as well as broken plural can take feminine third person singular verb form. Therefore ,ู‚ูŽุงู„ูŽุชู’ and ู„ูŽูŠู’ุณูŽุชู’ are used with these nouns.

Another example of such feminine verb with collective nouns, you can see in Surah Al- Haaqqa, Surah no. 69 verse no.4, there, for Thamood ุซู…ูˆุฏ and Aad ุนุงุฏ, names of two ู‚ูˆู…, feminine verb ูƒูŽุฐู‘ูŽุจูŽุชู’ is used. Thereafter , feminine pronouns are used wherever any "Qaum" ู‚ูˆู… is referred.

I hope this is very clear to you.
